Course Objectives

By the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Summarize the legal aspects of terrorism and homeland security, including domestic, foreign, and international legislation and cases.
  2. Discuss the broad topics of civil and criminal legal matters as well as public policy issues.
  3. Analyze the topics that will be addressed, including but not limited to: definitional issues; statutory frameworks and offenses/prosecutions; military tribunals; intelligence collection, analysis, and sharing; political surveillance and antiterrorism; surveillance technologies; military/law enforcement overlap; civil liberties/national security balancing; state, federal and foreign (regional/international) law; immigration; private right of action; and freedom of expression/restrictions on the media.

Legal Aspects of Homeland Security & Terrorism

Credit Hours: 3

Description:This course covers the legal aspects of terrorism and homeland security including domestic, foreign, and international legislation and cases. Other civil and criminal legal matters and public policy relating to terrorism/homeland security will be addressed.

Pre-requisites: LEJA 331 (Survey of Homeland Security) or permission of instructor/director.
