Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the complexity of information dissemination during a multi-agency threat response.
  2. Know past scenarios in which information dissemination was measured and factors that affected speed and accuracy of that communication.
  3. Apply communication variables at the education, dissemination, reception, and evaluation stages of a threat communication process.
  4. Design effective warning and response seeking messages.
  5. Measure information flow and listener response in post-disaster evaluation.
  6. Respect the natural impact of repeated warning events on public response.

Community Readiness: Communication during Crisis 

Credit Hours: 3

Description: Students who take this class will gain a framework within which to assess communication needs in times of crisis and to develop skills for disseminating and evaluating messages at six stages of crisis communication: 1) education, 2) detection, 3) prediction, 4) dissemination, 5) reception, and 6) evaluation.

Pre-requisites: COM 111 (or similar social science theory course), 297 (or research method equivalent), or approval of course instructor (check with your campus coordinator)
